SUMMARY:VT Reads 2026 Book Discussion w/ Alan Berolzheimer - Charity & Sylvia
DESCRIPTION:Join Dr. Alan Berolzheimer\, Vermont Humanities scholar\, as he leads a community book discussion of the Vermont Reads book Charity & Sylvia by Tillie Walden. Limited copies of the book are available at the Athenaeum circulation desk to read before the discussion. \nWeybridge\, Vermont in February 1807 is small\, cold\, lonely\, and beautiful. As an unwed woman with few prospects\, Sylvia Drake resides with and cares for her sister’s rambunctious family. But today the house is abuzz awaiting a guest—Charity Bryant. So opens Charity &Sylvia by Tillie Walden\, the award-winning\, Vermont-based cartoonist and author of Spinning and On a Sunbeam. Created by Walden from archival materials at the Henry Sheldon Museum of Vermont History in Middlebury\, and other primary and secondary sources\, Charity & Sylvia is a groundbreaking biography that is also the story of 19th century America. \nFor 44 years Charity Bryant and Sylvia Drake lived together as life partners in small town Vermont. And in Walden’s graphic novel\, America grows alongside these women. We see the arrival of railroads\, the terms of 14 Presidents\, riots\, rebellion\, and plagues. \nVermont Humanities Scholar Alan Berolzheimer has directed the book publishing program of the Vermont Historical Society since 1998. He is also the project historian and assistant director of The Flow of History\, a Teaching American History program providing professional development activities to Vermont teachers. Alan received a Ph.D. in 20th-century U.S. History from the University of Virginia in 1996. He lives in Norwich. Vermont Reads events are sponsored by Vermont Humanities supported in part by the National Endowment for Humanities. \nThis event is free\, ADA accessible\, and open to the public. \nWebsite: https://www.stjathenaeum.org/adult-events-1/2026/10/14/vermont-reads-community-book-discussion-charity-and-sylvia-with-alan-berolzheimer

SUMMARY:Music in the Gallery-Benji Aresty
DESCRIPTION:Join us in the splendid setting of the 19th-century Art Gallery for our Music Series\, with Benji Aresty. \nAmerican-born songwriter and visionary Benji Aresty brings his rising independent music project to the Athenaeum. With a voice that’s lived many lives and lyrics that cut straight to the heart\, Benji writes songs that feel like soul medicine—raw\, real\, and meant to move you. The music spans folk\, blues\, soul\, and cinematic rock\, grounded in live instrumentation and emotional storytelling. \nBenji’s songwriting is deeply personal\, often born from grief\, love\, transformation\, and spiritual inquiry. His lyrics are a call to feel more\, to heal more\, and to live more aligned with truth. Whether it’s an acoustic ballad or an electrifying anthem\, each song is created with purpose: to open hearts\, spark conversations\, and create moments of collective resonance. \nAresty. isn’t just about sound—it’s about soul. The project’s mission is to use music as a tool for emotional and social awakening. Its vision reaches beyond entertainment\, aiming to build community\, raise consciousness\, and be a bridge between cultures. In a time when the world is aching for authenticity and healing\, Aresty. is showing up with open arms\, a full band\, and a message that matters. Listeners of Ray LaMontagne\, The Head The Heart\, John Mayer and Michael Franti will enjoy Aresty. \nThis event is free\, ADA accessible\, and open to the public. \nWebsite: https://www.stjathenaeum.org/adult-events-1/2026/9/18/music-in-the-art-gallery-tooussaint-st-negritude-cz7aa \n

SUMMARY:Let Your Fascia Flow
DESCRIPTION:Let Your Fascia Flow is a 2-hour workshop led by KC Lyons and incorporates Self Myofascial Release techniques and Yoga to release tension\, alleviate pain\, and improve mobility. \nWhat is fascia? By targeting key areas of tight fascia\, this class will help you reduce discomfort\, alleviate pain\, and increase your flexibility and range of motion. This workshop is open to everyone\, whether you’re an athlete\, someone with chronic tension\, or someone simply looking to improve your overall well-being. \nNo previous yoga experience is required—just bring your curiosity and willingness to try something new! \n$35 per workshop. SUMMARY:Unveiling the Shadows: Myths and Legends of the NEK and North Country w/ Robert Jones
DESCRIPTION:The Northeast Kingdom and the New Hampshire North Country are lands of deep woods\, granite peaks\, and long winters—the perfect breeding ground for stories that refuse to die. \nJoin us for an evocative journey into the folklore that defines our rugged corner of New England. From the elusive Lake Memphremagog sea serpent to the whispered tales of Abenaki legends\, forgotten ghost towns\, and the strange occurrences that haunt the White Mountains\, we will explore how these myths shaped the identity of the people who call this wilderness home. \nWhether you’re a skeptic\, a believer\, or simply a lover of a good yarn\, this talk will peel back the layers of local history to reveal the magic and mystery hidden in plain sight. \nPresented by Robert Jones\, Owner of St. Johnsbury’s Ysbrydoliaeth Curiosity Shop / Magasin de curiosités & NEK Language School.
